It’s All About the Pom-Poms! By Ms. Gwen Clark

As you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast cancer is the leading killer among women aged 40 –59. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors. All women, and even men, are at some risk.
In an effort to help promote October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the WHS cheerleaders and “future” cheerleaders wore their pink during the Youth Night Show during halftime to show their support.
During the show, they  performed a half–time routine which included some cheers and a dance to “Goodbye,” which they learned at the cheer clinic.   The “Goodbye” song was symbolically a message to cancer itself— so long and goodbye.
Chrystal Harsha, a former employee of WCS, is a cancer survivor and is participating in the AVON BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION WALK in Charlotte, NC the weekend of October 23-24. The WHS cheerleaders and some participants from the clinic have donated $100.00 to Mrs.Harsha’s  walk in Charlotte.

WCS Collects Box Tops For Education By Ms. Sabrina Martin

Congratulations to Mrs. Alexander's kindergarten class for bringing in 389 Box Tops for September!  Their class was rewarded with a cookie party last week.
Runner-up was Ms. Wood's class with 182 box tops! The collection and rewards will begin again at the end of October.  We roughly estimate that WCS made close to $100 this month just by bringing in these box tops! Thanks!

National School Lunch Week:What’s on Your Tray? By Chelsea Caudill

National School Lunch Week was October 11-15.  The cafeteria planned special menus for the week, and we honored them with a delicious breakfast by resident Chef Eddie Bledsoe.  The ambiance for the scrumptious meal was enhanced with lovely embroidered hand towels for each of the staff members brought to you by our multi-talented Pre-K teacher, Ms. Betty Thompson.  Also joining the crew for breakfast was Ms. Rosa Williams and Ms. Nancy Alexander, retired WCS cafeteria staff members, Ms. Ann McConnel, Newberry County Director for the Office of Child Nutrition, and Mr. Jim Suber, Newberry County Assistant Superintendent for Operations.   The WCS Cafeteria staff welcomes you to take a quiz to discover your  school lunch personality by visiting www.whatsonyourtray.org .

Bus Safety Week By Ms. Martha Suber

October 18– 22 was bus safety week and everyone at WCS who was involved with buses from the bus coordinator to the bus rider had a hand in making this year’s drills a success.
We would like to thank all of you who help make our buses and bus stops safe.  According to Greg Kaylor of the Cleveland Daily Banner, Although a school bus is one of the safest modes of transportation for school children, there are still things which can go wrong and in and instant, cause a life-altering or tragic occurrence.”
This year’s national theme for Bus Safety week is “Cross in View, It’s the Right Thing to Do,” highlights the importance of school bus safety and education.

Senior Betas Think Pink By Ms. LaVerne Brock

This fall, the Whitmire High School Beta Club was thinking of  the typical autumn colors.  They weren’t even thinking black and gold, which are the Beta Club colors.  They were thinking pink!
The club teamed up with local cancer survivor and former WCS bookkeeper, Chrystal Harsha to raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation.  Mrs. Harsha set a goal for $1800 to take with her to the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation Walk the third

week of  October.
The WHS Senior Beta Club was pleased to present Mrs. Harsha with a contribution of $100.00, helping her achieve her goal.

Speaking Out in Class By Ms. S. Brown

Mrs. S. Brown's public speaking students had the opportunity to practice their skills in various classrooms around campus.

Alana English and Kentrel Whitmire are shown here addressing Mrs. Doolittle's students on the importance of good hygiene.

Homecoming/Spirit Week By Ms. Caroline Raines

The 2010 Homecoming Week was fantastic! We had the best pep rally in WCS history. Everyone had so many wacky ideas for this year’s spirit week! This year’s spirit week days were multi-color day, holiday day, twin day, camo day, and of course, everyone’s favorite-  blue and gold day! We had elementary through high school dress up on these awesome but crazy days. The whole school dressed up, making that week so exciting.

The Homecoming Pep Rally was where we mostly  got pumped. It was kindergarten through 12th grade, and the elementary kids showed the most school spirit. We had a great laugh when Coach Mac, Coach King, and Coach Tepper had to dress up as cheerleaders and cheered at the pep rally with everyone. Then we went to the Homecoming Parade!                   This year’s parade had so many floats for anyone that wanted one. There were floats ranging from classes to queens. We were even able to get the former homecoming queens to be in it too. After this entire wacky school spirit event, we had the Homecoming Game against Dixie!
The game was good because the football players played their hardest, cheerleaders cheered their cheers correctly and the band played their songs wonderfully! PAWS had a blast with all the little kids chasing him and signing autographs.
Then to top everything off, the Homecoming Week ended with the crowning of the Homecoming Queen! This year’s Homecoming Queen was Haley Erskine. Overall this year’s homecoming week was a lot of fun for every grade, class, and for the whole school!
